I view and post ASCII art from my machine at home using Outlook Express without any problems. Tools->Options->Fonts. Set both Fixed width and proportional fonts to a fixed width font. Lucida Console is my chosen one but you could equally use whatever fixed width font you want to. I have no problems viewing messages because if they are actually designed to be using proportional fonts chances are they use HTML anyway.
