vile comes with a simple picture drawing mode, written in vile's macro
language.  the biggest problem with it is that you need to start on a
blank "canvas" of lines made up of spaces.  other than that, you move
around with h,j,k,l, and it draws the right lines.  diagonals work too,
based on u,i,n, and m (based on keyboard layout, nothing else), and
you can type other text whenever you want.  it's not perfect, but it's
as useful as an ascii drawing tool really needs to be these days.  hmmm.
given the newsgroups line, i'm not sure i should have said that last bit.
