Blockmode in Vim lets you select a rectangular block for deleting,
copying or even filling with a special character. Quite demonstration:

    ############################
    # #
    # OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO #
    # OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO #
    # OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO #
    # OOO OOO #
    # OOO OOO #
    # OOO A simple box OOO #
    # OOO OOO #
    # OOO OOO #
    # OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO #
    # OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO #
    # OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO #
    # #
    ############################

Here I've firstly made a block of #-characters, then a smaller block
with spaces, a block with O's and again a space-block. In no time at all
:-)))

 So long!
