You know, after seeing this picture so many times... I can't believe it 
only finally comes to me what this really looks like to me...

It appears, to me. to be a propane light that normally hangs on the 
ceiling.  My family has a camp in the middle of the Adirondack Mountains 
in NY state, and there is no electricity and the only running water is 
the brook next to our camp.  Every year we have to drag in a new tank of 
propane and (probably illegally) drag it across the river and up the hill 
to our camp.  This looks exactly like some of the Humphery lighting 
fixture that were installed in the camp probably about 50 years ago..

The arm on the left side, is where the propane comes in and where it's 
attached to the wall or ceiling, and the little thing to the right of the 
arm is where you adjust how much propane is sent to the light...

Just thought I would throw that in... as the thought just comes to me.
