That's really all there is to it!  If you're interested in doing ASCII
artwork and drawing, just sit down and play around with the characters and see
what you can come up with.  See how it all fits?  PLAY and FUN go hand in hand
when it comes to this...heck, no one's paying us for this (although it would
be nice ;)  Also, it helps to pick up pointers by looking at other people's
artwork and then developing your own style.  You'll see that different artists
have their own techniques (for example: Susie Oviatt, Felix Lee, Normand
Vielleux, and I have some technique somewhere around here...)

The biggest problem preventing most people from doing ascii art is sitting
down and getting started.  It's not that ideas are hard to come by, otherwise
there wouldn't be so many requests posted.  Lack of artistic talent isn't a
big excuse, because anyone can draw a stick figure with a pencil and paper. 
It's just a matter of what you do in addition to the stick figure.  That's
when after you've exhausted your own "ability" you can post and ask others to
help you out afterwords.  Just have more confidence in your own work.

So, sit down in front of a keyboard (which you're most likely doing now) and
start having fun!
