Have you ever used desqview? It was a text[1] based windowing system
for dos it's free on the net thses days (try www.freedv.com or search
for it. Runs on an xt+ even!)

And since your looking at slackware, what about a text/ascii 'x'
server &/or window manager? x sends hints and requests which the
server can deny -> a window can have a speecific size and only accept
a particular font. also there is the ascii-art library, which I know
very little about (I believe a Mac hack contest was once won by
porting/writing a quicktime view with it)

I guess just a window manager could run in graphics mode but only
accept text type hints/requests. mayne even make a native x-server for
standard
