We-ll, originally it is the brand name for some food in a can. It's
a contraction of "spiced ham." (After the brand name "We Don't Really
Know What It Is But It's Cheaper Than Meat" didn't chatch on.)

Then along came Monty Python's Flying Circus with a sketch about a
restaurant in which everything is served with spam, and a dispropor-
tionate amount at that.

Then the internet was born, which before the advent of AOL consisted
solely of incredibly intelligent, sophisticated, and witty partici-
pants who appreciated mostly the subtle and arcane humor of Monty Py-
thon, Douglas Adams, and Benny Hill. Out of their incredible talent
of foresight they anticipated that one day, once normal people would
be allowed into their playground of supermandom, a practice of flood-
ing people and newsgroups with advertising would take hold, making it
harder and harder to find information of any significance within a
heap of undirected "Get Rich Quick" scheme propositions.

With their unprecedented talent of drawing parallels those early fig-
ures of light of the computer age realized that searching one's mail-
box for important messages would one day become as hard as finding
real food is for the customer in the aforementioned Pythonesque res-
taurant. Thus they applied the term "spam" to just those floods of
garbage which would one day make it nigh impossible to find anything
of value online anymore.
