These two associations were only attributed to the symbol after
Christianity had come about. It had been used as a symbol of protection
for many, many years before that. Today is it commonly used by Pagans
(read "those of non-Christian religions not unlike Mother-Earth
types"). Those people normally have little to do with Satanists if
anything at all as the two don't tend to approve of each other's morals
and view-points spiritually, or otherwise.

The symbol bore and stills bears much meaning elsewhere. It's origins can
be traced back to early Egypt.

Realistically speaking, that is untrue. Those who use this symbol are
divided into 4 groups: Christians, Luciferians, Satanists (who don't
believe in Satan as a conciousness but as a force), and then various
branches of European-derived folk religions (such as Strega, Asatru, and
the modern religion of Wicca).
