Deja, like my newreader (presently), and many others readers, and most likely yours also, is set to the default of using Latin1 (iso-8859-1) character set. Char 187 is part of iso-8859-1. It is not part of ASCII (iso-646), which is actually a subset of 8859-1 (OK, 8859-1 is a superset of 646, same as Unicode (iso-10464) is a superset of 8859-1 *). * logically, physically it is a subset of 646 when UTF-8 coded and somewhat derived from 8859-1 when UTF-16 or UTF-32 coded.
