F.ex. qualitative properties of a certain animal (it either has a tail or not, it has a discrete amount of legs et cetera) or a quantitative variable (measuring the current temperature or whatever, a real value). Actually, quantitative variables can also be discrete... That's statistics for you. :) -jg
