Re: About rendering ascii code in a .txt medium
Just some info... Nate / DAC wrote: <snipped> >ASCII art still requires only CODE element. The ASCII code standard >(perhaps as defined by RFC-20? The acronym ASCII refers to the ANSI-standard X3.4: "(American National Standard) code for information interchange". The first edition of that standard was released in 1968, the second in 1977 (see McGraw-Hill, "Compilation of datacommunication standards", 1982). The latest edition was released in 1986 (see <www.ansi.org>). Designation: ANSI X3.4-1986 (R1997) Title: Information Systems - Coded Character Sets - 7-Bit American National Standard Code for Information Interchange (7-Bit ASCII) Standard Type: Publisher: ITI Price: 32.00 >I'd like to see it (RFC20) just for the purpose of >seeing it). <snipped> Same here :) But no online version of RFC20 is available anymore. I looked here: <http://www.nexor.com/public/rfc/index/rfc.html> RFC20 "ASCII format for network interchange." V.G. Cerf (Not online) (Status: UNKNOWN) ... and here: <http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/htbin/rfc/INDEX.rfc.html> RFC20, V. Cerf, "ASCII format for network interchange", 10/16/1969.(Pages=6) Even given this small amount of info on RFC20, it's highly unlikely Vint Cerf invented ASCII all by himself. Probably RFC20 was just one of the many implementations/modifications of ANSI X3.4. To put things in perspective: In october 1969 RFC20 just applied to the handful of nodes that made up the original ARPANET, whereas ANSI X3.4 was accepted nationwide to deal with all kinds of media... hth, mic
