I also have been unable to access <aaa> (using WinVN) but have seen new 
messages by going to DejaNews http://www.dejanews.com
and doing a power search of alt.ascii-art only

For some unknown reason (that I won't question) I _can_ access 
alt.ascii-art.animation and am sending this from there. 

Allen, please e-mail me if you got a strange message when trying to load <aaa>
