Do a search for aview - that has a quite good output IMHO, and you can also change the brightness/contrast/gamma correction interactively to get better results. On the other hand, I don't know if there is a windows-version for that - but who really cares *eg* You quite surely can compile it with the cygnus cygwin tools. Have fun!
