Okay. There are general rules to Usenet and there are special rules to
Usenet. Ready?

General rule for signatures:
1. No signature should ever be more than four lines long, or eighty
characters wide. This is called the "McQ" (for McQuarrie) limit.
It *can* be longer, but 99 times out of a hundred it doesn't *have*
    to be.

In general people will be tolerant if you are, say, one line over. But
if they get angry at you, they will start nit-picking.

Special rules for signatures:
1. A signature can be of any length whatsoever in groups that tolerate
    or encourage this practice.

Most of the groups that tolerate this only do so if the signature is
on-topic. That means, in alt.ascii-art, overly long signatures MUST
have ASCII art in them.

Special rule for alt.ascii-art:
1. Never, ever use a character that is not on your keyboard, unless you
    are speaking in tongues.

If you *must* have a long signature, and are in a group that encourages
them, it also is 'good netiquette' to leave it unattached when your post
is extremely small. (I forget if this is an easy or difficult task on
AOL. Is there a checkbox in message composition?)

(My signature has about an average of five lines.  One is always blank;
that's a limitation of the signature randomizer. They also are a little
longer than they used to be since I switched back to Netscape and a
72-line window.)

If you still don't understand, ask. :)
