They would either use his rank or just call him Mr. Nerd Boy. I used the fairly low-ranking ensign, because Nerd Boy probably just recently joined up. He spent most of his life designing new transporters and warp cores and such, and just now got around to sailing around the galaxy. He's the Chief Engineer already because he's really good at what he does.
