Yeah right, try having GIF versions of all my ASCII files.
It would certainly fill up my account and most of my HD too...

Yes GIFs are smaller than other picture formats.
but it would never match pure letters and ascii symbols.

Not all email-clients can implement gif's into the mails,
and certainly not beside the text, just as an attachement.
(Unless you use that *"#%!% Netscape Communicator 4.0)

You gotta admit that ascii art should stay what it is:
ASCII ART - art based on the ascii characters, NOT
image pixels.
