This is one trick that I sometime use in vi (or vim).

You can filter lines through other commands with the ! command.
For example, say I have this typed on a line:

Warning!

If I use the ! command in vi with the cursor on this line:

!figlet -c

Then this is the result:
                  __ __ _ _
                  \ \ / /_ _ _ __ _ __ (_)_ __ __ _
                   \ \ /\ / / _` | '__| '_ \| | '_ \ / _`
                    \ V V / (_| | | | | | | | | | | (_| |_|
                     \_/\_/ \__,_|_| |_| |_|_|_| |_|\__, (_)
                                                     |___/

Cheers
Tony
