I always thought this was the lamest advice ever until I tried it: join a club. Archery club, book club, walking club, sci fi club. My brother's girlfriend is in a medieval arms and armour society and he's in a tree climber's guild and rowing club. Go look up the recreational services manager of your local council and ask them.
