Features of the 3D to ASCII Art Converter

  • 8 creative 3D sources: a library of 100+ ready-made shapes, 3D text, extruded icons, uploaded models, math equations, procedural terrain, Gielis supershapes and image relief.
  • 100+ predefined shapes: spheres, tori, knots, polyhedra, hearts, gears, a teapot, molecules and dozens more, rendered live to ASCII.
  • Equations: convert mathematical surfaces (z = f(x, y)) into ASCII, from egg cartons and ripples to your own custom formula.
  • Terrain: generate procedural landscapes – mountains, dunes, islands and canyons – with a randomizable seed.
  • Supershapes: explore the Gielis superformula, from stars and flowers to starfish and spiky balls, with a handful of sliders.
  • Image relief: upload any picture and turn its brightness into a 3D relief, optionally keeping the image’s own colors.
  • Upload your own models: import STL, OBJ, GLTF or GLB files and see them as ASCII art instantly.
  • Mono & colored ASCII: render in classic monochrome or full color, with a contrast control to make the art pop.
  • Custom character sets: pick a preset ramp or type your own characters to control density and style.
  • Interactive & real-time: rotate with the mouse, auto-spin, and adjust lighting, resolution and scale as you watch.
  • Copy & export: copy the ASCII to your clipboard or export it, ready to paste anywhere.
  • Fullscreen mode: a distraction-free fullscreen workspace (Premium feature).

The 3D to ASCII Art Converter is built with vanilla JavaScript, Bootstrap and Three.js for real-time 3D rendering. Like our other tools, it is crafted in-house with a focus on quality and performance.

Frequently asked questions

It is a free online tool that renders 3D objects as text characters in real time. You pick a 3D source (a predefined shape, an uploaded model, 3D text, a math surface, terrain, a supershape or an image relief) and the lit 3D scene is converted into ASCII art that you can rotate, recolor and export.

Choose the Image Relief source and upload any image (drag & drop or browse). Its brightness becomes a 3D height map, and lighting on the raised areas reveals the shape. You can keep the picture’s original colors or let a color theme recolor it.

Yes. Use the Upload source to import an STL, OBJ, GLTF or GLB file and it is converted to ASCII art instantly, with full rotation and lighting controls.

Absolutely. The Equations source renders mathematical surfaces of the form z = f(x, y) with presets like egg carton, ripple and peaks, plus a field for your own custom formula. The Supershapes source uses the Gielis superformula to create stars, flowers and spiky balls from a few sliders.

Mono renders the art in a single color and uses character density for shading, the classic ASCII look. Color mode renders the same scene with per-character colors. A Contrast control lets you brighten the result so it reads clearly against a dark background.

Use the Copy button to place the ASCII text on your clipboard, or the Export button to save it. The art you create is free to use for personal and commercial projects.

Yes, the tool is free to use. A Premium upgrade unlocks extra shapes, higher resolution, fullscreen mode and an ad-free experience.
